CHOP had the first NICU in the country, started by Dr C Everett Koop, who later became the Surgeon General of the United States under President Reagan. He helped develop the first incubator for tiny babies who would otherwise not have survived. Today many tiny premature babies are able to expect to live a perfectly normal life, when before NICU care they would have died or been very sick for the remainder of their lives.
